Flat Planet is the result of many years spent in some of the most spectacular and remote places around the globe. We have traveled deep within the canyon of Zion, across the dunes of the Sahara, through ancient cities of Rome and many places in between. These places, and the people we met there, have changed the way we live and the way we we view the world.
Our deepest passion is to provide opportunities for you to explore and discover the world and the people in it. We accomplish this through a mixture of historical education and cultural interaction. As world travelers, we thrive by experiencing new places, but we believe you cannot adequately experience foreign landscapes without interacting with the people who make this world, and each particular place in it, unique.
All our trips are led and operated by guides with extensive education and international experience. We also employ residents of each locale so our travelers have the opportunity to learn about the cultural landscape from those who live in it. We learn about people by listening to their stories, sharing their food, and embracing their culture. Every Flat Planet trip will give you the opportunity to see the world in new and refreshing ways, ways that will change how you view the world and how you live in it.
What's with the name? I thought the earth was round....
In 1519, the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan set off on an expedition that would change how humanity saw the world. Despite Ferdinand being killed prior to returning home from the voyage, Ferdinand's vessel was the first to sail around the world. What did this prove? The world is not flat!
The world is changed by people of courage who have the courage to take risks and discover the unknown. Ferdinand helped us see the earth's curvature by having the courage to step out and discover something new. Nearly 500 years later, we live in a completely different world than Ferdinand. We know the world is round and we can even get to the other side of the globe in a single day, but we don't. We live in our own little section of the globe and only hear about the other places from third party's: school books, news outlets, or the infallible social media. At Flat Planet, we believe you cannot truly know a people or a place until you have traveled there. We will take you on an adventure to explore other parts of the globe and build relationships with the people who live there. Our hope is that after doing so, there will be less cerebral distance between you and your new friends around the globe. Our hope is to level the playing field and bring people from all over the world together in community. Our hope is to see no more of an "us and them" mentality, but rather an understanding that we all share the same earth, the same living space, the same horizon, the same Flat Planet.
Meet the explorers behind Flat Planet
Scott & Kristen Bargaehr
Scott and Kristen are adventurers to the core. They met working at a summer camp teaching kids about the wonders of the outdoors in the Ansel Adams Wilderness and Yosemite National Park. Surfing, climbing, backpacking, canyoneering, dancing, and making music are just a few of the things they love to do while traveling the world in search of new adventures. Scott has a heart for education and self-discovery and Kristen is the administrator that holds the whole operation together.
Cameron & Ashley Marvin
Cameron and Ashley are dreamers, visionaries, and veteran world travelers. The sands of the Tunisian desert are always in their shoes as they travel, reminding them of a people a place that is very near to their hearts. Ashley is a fantastic photographer who captures their explorations with artistic flourish. The photos above are just a taste of her work. Cameron has a passion for historical education and loves to help people connect the ideas of the past to the experiences of the present. These two met while helping Oscar the Grouch clean up after the Cookie Monster during the filming of Sesame Street.
