Travel with Purpose

Flat Planet…Not Flat Earth

We are sorry to disappoint, but no, Flat Planet it is not a nod to all the flat earthers our there. Quite the opposite, actually.

We call ourselves Flat Planet because we believe in the importance of experience. We live in a world captivated by an endless flow of information, presented in the form of memes, tweets, and snapshots from people we have never encountered. And, whether we like it or not, this stuff forms us. We are prone to mimic (sometimes passionately) what we see, hear, and read, even when experience is not on our side. This is what our ancestors did when they passed down a vision of the world being flat. Common sense was challenged when Ferdinand Magellan’s ship, The Victory, sailed around the world. I’m sure Magellan would have preferred to have gone out in glory with his ship falling off the edge of the earth instead of being killed in battle, but unfortunately for him, he did die in battle and his ship never made the plunge of glory. However, the result of The Victory’s eventual trip around the globe was the beginning of perspective change.

Now, we know that this is only part of the story. Magellan’s risk changed the way we view the world, but his story was also laced with tragedy. There was plenty of death and exploitation that followed him on his journey.

Our mission at Flat Planet is to lead you on adventures that change the way you view the world. We accomplish this through traveling to places rich in history, culture, and landscape and taking the posture of a learner along the way. We intentionally limit the number of travelers on our trips to ensure a personalized experience that honors the local culture. When possible, we use public transit, eat local food, and learn from local people about their land, story, and culture. All of this is for the purpose of leading you on your Flat Planet journey, where you learn to allow discovery and experience to reshape the way you look at this beautiful world we live in. There is a ton of beauty out there, and we look forward to experiencing it with you!
